Fifty members of the Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club and chaperones traveled to Philadelphia, PA for the 13th annual Brenda McQueen Black History Month Trip.
These trips to visit historically significant sites are named in honor of Brenda McQueen, a former member of the Club’s Board of Directors who passed away in 2003. She organized the trips for several years. On the first day the group visited the Belmont Mansion Underground Railroad Museum, International Records and the Boys & Girls Club of Philadelphia, the first club to serve an African-American community. The highlight of the day was when Club member Donnell and staff member Chris recorded a song on the spot at International Records. They also visited the Liberty Bell, Liberty Hall, the First Congressional building and Senate Chambers as well as the Johnson House Historic Site. On Sunday they attended service at the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church where the entire service was based on youth. After church the Club members went on a surprise visit to New York, where they saw the Harlem neighborhood, World Trade Center site and Times Square.
