4/1/2011 10:00:00 AM
The Youth of the Year program promotes and celebrates service to Club, community and family as well as academic performance, moral character and life goals. 2011 YOY, Matthew has been a member of Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club - Sportsman’s Park Unit for twelve years. A senior at Metro High School Academy, Matthew is a successful student with a current GPA of 3.2 and recently became a member of the National High School Scholars. He is involved in several extracurricular activities including Poetry Club, the school newspaper, Tech Crew and manager of the varsity baseball team.
Matthew said that the Club has had a very positive influence on his life and when he is here he feels important and needed. He often refers to the Club as his second home. Matt first attended the Club as a summer camper. After a few summers he began attending the after school programs and met Club staff member, Melvin Davis. Melvin encouraged Matt to get involved with the Boy Scouts and served as a mentor to him. Matthew interacts well with peers, younger members, staff, and visitors. Because of his positive attitude and dedication to the Club, Matt is frequently asked to represent the Club in the community. He enjoyed volunteering in the game room and interacting with other Club members and was hired as a camp counselor in 2008. The Club and the staff have taught him that anything is possible.
Matthew’s goals include graduating from high school in May 2011 and attending the University of Northern Iowa where he will pursue a business degree. He said with a college education “there is no limit for me.” He will compete for the title of Missouri State Youth of the Year in Jefferson City in April.
